In Indonesia, studies show that a relatively low number of people with disabilities are employed—about 18%. It's where the Godrej Consumer Products Limited team in Indonesia recognised an opportunity to create change, and decided to act. Starting October 2024, leaders at GCPL Indonesia launched BERSIAP—a programme specifically designed to help bring more people with disabilities into the workforce.
"Bersiap" is a war cry that translates to "get ready" or "be prepared," and it has its origins in Indonesia's movement for independence. The goal of BERSIAP, a virtual programme, is to provide soft-skill training and mentorship, empowering PwD talent to thrive in professional environments. It includes a six-month internship following the training.
The BERSIAP team found leaders Cicin Winedar and Rajesh Sethuraman particularly helpful in their unwavering support and commitment to the programme. It was crucial to ensure that the right infrastructure was in place. This meant conducting thorough audits of both physical and digital infrastructure in May 2024. GCPL partnered with Konekin, a DEI consultancy, to ensure readiness in areas such as infrastructure, digital technology, and ecosystem development. It took four months to make all necessary upgrades and create a more seamless and inclusive experience for all participants.

Inclusion goes beyond just providing the right tools and technology—it’s also about fostering the right attitude. To promote understanding and respect, GCPL rolled out Disability Equality Training (DET) for all members of the GCPL team. “Disability Equality Training (DET) emphasises recognising humanity, challenging stereotypes, and fostering inclusion of PwD. It highlights the importance of acknowledging PwD presence in all areas of life”, said Ronald Susanto, Shopper Marketing Head, participant of the DET.
GCPL reached out to universities in Indonesia through Konekin. Forty candidates were invited for interviews, and thirty profiles were selected for this year’s programme. Each participant underwent training in key areas such as ethics, business communication, and problem-solving. “I am truly grateful for this programme, as it has equipped me with many new skills. It is incredibly beneficial for youth with disabilities who aspire to enter the workforce,” said Fayza, a participant of the BERSIAP programme.
The learning didn’t stop there—mentorship was a crucial part of the programme. Each mentor was assigned three mentees and held biweekly sessions to provide guidance and personalised support. “Being part of a team that champions equal opportunities is deeply meaningful to me, as I believe everyone has inherent value and purpose,” said Dewi Nurani, Regulatory Head, and mentor of the BERSIAP Program.
After completing the training, the candidates underwent evaluations, and based on their skills and interests, were offered internships in various departments, including R&D, IT, HR and Design. These will provide an opportunity for candidates to gain hands-on experience, and the team – as well as everyone at the Group – hopes that many will eventually join Godrej as full-time employees.
About the future of BERSIAP, GCPL Indonesia recognises that persons with disabilities (PwD) is an underrepresented talent pool in Indonesia with limited access to employment opportunities in the private sector. Through the programme, GCPL Indonesia is optimistic about seeing more talent from this pool joining us in the future, with a vision to sustain this programme and continually enhance this approach for future batches.
