Ektara Maheshwari (She/Her)

"I hope to see more people working besides me who are completely removed from their gender identity, or sexuality, and are only looked at for their work and for what they bring to the table."

Ektara grew up in Bikaner with a creative streak. Theatre was her passion for three years, but the film industry's bright lights in Mumbai called to her. However, she also craved stability, a counterpoint to artistic chaos. This unusual desire stemmed from a personal truth: Ektara is a trans woman. She works at GPL

The world often tells you who you should be, and Ektara spent her early years accepting that narrative. But with time, courage emerged, and she rewrote her story. Over time, Ektara has transitioned socially, legally and medically - a testament to her strength. "I define myself, not others," she says.

Landing a job at Godrej Industries at 27 with no corporate experience was a surprise, but Ektara says the corporate world was a revelation. "It's been awesome," she says, emphasising the supportive and inclusive environment. This sense of belonging feels like a stark contrast to the isolation she's faced in other avenues.

But Ektara's story goes beyond personal success. She's passionate about breaking stereotypes about the trans community. "People often doubt what we can achieve," she explains. Her success story challenges those doubts and paves the way for greater inclusion. “I hope to see more people working besides me who are completely removed from their gender identity, or sexuality, and are only looked at for their work and for what they bring to the table," she says.

The Godrej Industries group has been striving to match Ektara's commitment, working with experts to improve trans-inclusive policies, particularly regarding work hours and medical needs. Ektara's impact isn't limited to policies. At her Godrej Nest site, she's become a community builder. Initiatives like team-building Thursdays and meditation sessions bring people together. She hopes to be a reliable resource and a listening ear for her colleagues, she says. After all, acceptance can be found in surprising places.
